Updating Bitseed 3 to the latest version of Bitcoin Core

Bitseed 3 full nodes use Bitcoin Core to synchronize with the bitcoin network and validate the full blockchain history starting from the original genesis block mined by Satoshi Nakamoto. The following are instructions for updating Bitseed 3 to the latest version of Bitcoin Core. The procedure will stop bitcoind (the headless daemon used by Bitcoin Core implement the bitcoin protocol), download and install the latest version of Bitcoin Core, and then restart bitcoind when the update is complete. All blockchain data and settings will remain unchanged.

Note that with the release of Bitseed 3 we will no longer publish update instructions for Bitseed 2 nodes. Bitseed 2 owners can continue to keep their nodes up to date using the ARM binaries available from bitcoin.org.

Bitseed 3 is designed to automatically check for updates after each restart of Bitcoin Core. Here are instructions for restarting and updating Bitcoin Core:

Restart and update your Bitseed 3 node from the Bitseed Web UI

  1. Navigate to the Bitseed Web UI in your web browser while you are connected to the same network as your Bitseed 3 node. Instructions for finding the address of the Bitseed Web UI can be found in the Bitseed Quickstart Guide.
  2. Open the menu in the top left corner and go to the Settings page.
  3. Click the “Restart Bitcoin” button.

Bitcoin Core will update and restart. Allow 30 minutes for bitcoind to sync the blockchain before attempting to use the Bitseed Web UI or any CLI commands.

Restart and update your Bitseed 3 node from the Command Line Interface (CLI)

  1. Use your terminal to Secure Shell (SSH) into the device (Windows can use PuTTY).
    ssh bitcoin@yourbitseedinternalipaddresshere
  2. Enter the password printed on the bottom of the device and/or included with your device documentation, then enter the following commands:
    ./btcstop.sh
    ./btcwatch.sh

Bitcoin Core will update and restart. Allow 30 minutes for bitcoind to sync the blockchain before attempting to use the Bitseed Web UI or any CLI commands.

Troubleshooting

If you try either or both of the above instructions and Bitcoin Core still does not update, then try these instructions:

  1. Use your terminal to SSH into the device (Windows can use PuTTY).
    ssh linaro@yourbitseedinternalipaddresshere
  2. Enter the password printed on the bottom of the device and/or included with your device documentation, then enter the following commands:
    ./btcstop.sh
    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get install -y bitcoind

    ./btcwatch.sh

Bitcoin Core will update and restart. Allow 30 minutes for bitcoind to sync the blockchain before attempting to use the Bitseed Web UI or any CLI commands.
