Participating in the Bitnodes Incentive Program with a Bitseed Bitcoin Edition

The Bitcoin Foundation, in partnership with Bitnodes, is sponsoring an incentive program for people to run Bitcoin full nodes. Bitcoin payments worth $10 or more are sent weekly to a random registered node that is up and running consistently.

Participation requires:

  • Your node can be reached and accept connections on port 8333.
  • The node is running consistently when checked by the program.
  • The node has been properly activated on the Bitnodes server.
  • A bitcoin address has been registered to receive payments.
  • The node is verified by a webpage at your IP address which contains the registered bitcoin address.

Setup and run the Bitseed server

Make sure bitcoin is running:

 ./btcwatch.sh

Find out the local IP address of the Bitseed device:

  ifconfig

It will be referred to as “inet addr.” Copy and save the IP address for later use.

Create a new bitcoin address

Using a bitcoin wallet not on the Bitseed device, create a new bitcoin address. This address will be used to receive payouts from the Bitnodes incentive program. Copy and save this address for later use.

Set up a webpage on device

sudo apt-get install apache2
sudo mv /var/www/html/index.html /var/www/html/oldindex.html
sudo nano /var/www/html/index.html

Paste the saved bitcoin address on the first line of the new file.

To save and exit, press and hold:

ctrl+X

Type “yes” to save then press “enter.”

Test the webpage

On another PC, enter the IP address of the Bitseed device into the web browser address bar.

You should see a page that shows the bitcoin address you entered and saved.

Set Router

The Bitseed device will serve the page on port 80. You need to find the Port Forwarding controls in the router and connect the Bitseed device IP address, port 80, to be routed to port 80 to the outside world.

If possible, set the router to give the device a fixed IP address.

Adjust the DHCP lease time to maximum possible. Default may be 24hrs (86400 sec), causing you to go offline for a few minutes every day.

Activate

Get your public IP address here http://www.whatismyip.com/

and enter the following URL into a web browser on another computer. Replace “my.pub.ip.adr” with the numbers of your IP address and make sure to include -8333.

https://getaddr.bitnodes.io/nodes/my.pub.ip.adr-8333/

You will see a webpage. Click on the activate button, and a new page will show stats of your node. You may have to refresh the page after a few minutes to see your stats. If the page returns “DOWN,” then your device or your router may be misconfigured.

Register your bitcoin address for payment of any rewards

Run the following command line on the bitseed device:

(make sure to change “abc” to your bitcoin address and “my.pub.ip.adr” to your IP address)

curl --ipv4 -H 'Accept: application/json; indent=4' -d 'bitcoin_address=abc' -d 'url=http://my.pub.ip.adr' https://getaddr.bitnodes.io/api/v1/nodes/my.pub.ip.adr-8333/

You should see this result if successful

 {
 "success": true
 }

Bitnode Incentives

Your device should now be eligible for Bitnode rewards. You can check status at https://getaddr.bitnodes.io/nodes/incentive/.

Most home Internet connections have an IP address which might change from time to time (although it is common for it to remain the same for months). If your IP address changes, you will need to re-register.
